Need a great example of health living? Oklahoma City lost 1,000,000 (one million) pounds over the course of four years. The Mayor, Mick Cornett, set the goal and people responded. You know, it’s probably best to hear him tell the story.
Can you believe it? One million pounds lost by one city. And, Oklahoma City is working to make the loss permanent by doing things like adding side-walks to streets, making the downtown area more pedestrian friendly, and by connecting city owned services like libraries to neighborhoods with sidewalks. Why? So people will get out and walk! People from Oklahoma City really have something to be proud about.
You can take a look at the website Mayor Cornett put up on December 31, 2007. He’s given other cities, towns, hamlets and villages a blueprint for healthy living!
Healthy Living Is A Local Issue
As so many of you may know, health care is in some sort of transition in the USA. But, what isn’t in transition, is that you can take control of your health by taking control of your weight. You, and your city can start your own plan for healthy living. Healthy living is a local issue, and is one you can influence.
So, why is it important to lose a few pounds? The risks of being overweight or obese are incredible. According to the Centers for Disease Control the risks include:
- All-causes of death (mortality)
- High blood pressure (Hypertension)
- High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Coronary heart disease
And, those are just the Top Five Risks. Farther down the list you will see mental health, cancers, and chronic body pain. So, those few extra pounds are a big deal.
Healthy Living Rewards
What happens if you start to practice healthy living? What happens if you lose a few pounds? According to Washington University, even a small weight loss can show big results in heart and vascular health.
Even though they regained some weight, they still retained much of the heart and blood vessel benefit related to their weight loss.
While the politicians debate health care in Washington, you can improve healthy living where you live. Your city can declare a War On Weight; your city can go on a diet and improve the health of thousands. In OKC over 50,000 people lost weight. I wonder what can happen where you live?
What am I going to do? Communicate with my Mayor and city council member to see what my city can do. To challenge them to create a city of healthy living. Can a healthier population be created? Can we fight obesity and in the process bottle high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes? You bet we can! OKC has shown us how.
As always, thank you for your time.
